Alex Van Gestel, former executive director of worldwide brands at Anomaly, has joined Cheil USA as president and CEO, reporting to Cheil Americas President and CEO Buz Sawyer. Van Gestel replaces Dave Weaver, who is leaving to do independent consulting work.

The appointment follows that of Lars Bastholm as Cheil USA chief creative officer, who joined in December from Ogilvy North America where he was chief digital creative officer and N.Y. chief creative officer. Cheil executives call it another significant step in Cheil’s overall and ongoing transformation into a global independent agency network from solely an in-house Samsung agency.

“I’ve been doing this for a little less than a year and a half,” Sawyer said. “What I’m doing is a pretty major cultural transformation. My mission is the further localization of Cheil, moving it from being a Korean ad agency with branch offices to a global agency with its roots in Korea. That’s not a subtle difference.”

Van Gestel’s charge: to grow the U.S. flagship of Cheil Worldwide by both serving current clients Samsung and Hankook Tires and winning new business. He’ll oversee operations in Dallas and New York. His first order of business is bolstering “the foundations of what we have in the U.S.,” extending, broadening and “continuing to raise the bar creatively at Samsung to become an increasingly sophisticated brand in this market.”
